Nitrogen dioxide and its properties

First aid

1. Fresh air supply:

Immediately move the affected person to fresh air to end NO2 exposure and facilitate breathing.

2. Keep calm:

Reassure the person and ensure they are sitting or upright to facilitate breathing.

3. Unconsciousness:

Place unconscious persons in the recovery position to secure the airways and prevent suffocation.

4. Make an emergency call:

Call 911 immediately and report nitrogen dioxide poisoning to get medical help quickly.

5. Medical treatment:

To treat possible lung damage, the affected person should be taken to hospital for further treatment.

In case of unintentional release

1. Evacuation:

Clear the affected area immediately to avoid the risk of exposure.

2. Ventilation:

Ventilate the room well to dilute the NO2 gas and reduce its concentration.

3. Avoid ignition sources:

Immediately remove all open flames and sources of sparks to prevent explosions or fires.

4. Wear protective equipment:

Wear protective equipment such as respirators and gloves when handling the release.

5. Make an emergency call:

Call 911 immediately and report the release of nitrogen dioxide to call for professional help.

6. Air quality monitoring:

Monitor air quality regularly until the concentration of NO2 has been reduced to safe levels.
