Synthetic refrigerants and their properties

Artificial refrigerants are chemicals that were previously mainly used in cooling systems and air conditioning systems. Although they have no smell and no color, they are harmful to the ozone layer, which protects our planet from dangerous UV radiation. For this reason, Freon gases are now being replaced by environmentally friendly alternatives.

Gas characteristics

  • Colorless and odorless: Synthetic refrigerants are neither visible nor perceptible.
  • Refrigerant: Primarily used in refrigerators, air conditioning systems and Heat pumps.
  • Propellant: Formerly also used as a propellant in spray cans.
  • Non-flammable: Synthetic refrigerants are usually non-flammable.
  • Cooling: Their low boiling temperature makes them perfect for cooling processes.

Questions about the detection of Synthetic refrigerants?

DANGERS

  • Ozone depletion: Certain Freon gases damage the ozone layer and cause an increase in UV radiation on Earth.
  • Toxicity: In high concentrations, Freon gases can cause health problems such as shortness of breath or dizziness.
  • Asphyxiation: Freon can displace oxygen in the air; this can happen if it is released in large quantities.
  • Environmental damage: The gases promote the greenhouse effect and thus climate change.
  • Volatility: As a volatile substance, freon can easily escape into the atmosphere, increasing pollutant emissions.

HIGH-RISK SCENARIOS

  • Leakage in cooling systems: When Freon leaks from refrigerators or air conditioning systems, it can concentrate indoors, affecting air quality and causing health problems.
  • Ozone depletion: The use of Freon gases in large quantities damages the ozone layer, which increases the risk of skin cancer and eye diseases due to more intense UV radiation.
  • Uncontrolled disposal: Freon-containing appliances that are disposed of improperly can release Freon and other harmful substances that enter and pollute the environment; the gases remain in the atmosphere, exacerbating climate change.
  • Accidents in industrial plants: In Industry, where large quantities of Freon are used, leaks or explosions can pose a considerable risk to employees.
  • Fire hazard: Under extreme conditions, Freon may react with certain chemicals to cause potentially hazardous reactions.

1. Fresh air supply:

  • Immediately remove the affected person to fresh air to stop exposure and increase oxygen levels.

2. calm down and support breathing:

  • Calm the person and encourage them to breathe calmly and deeply. This gives the body more oxygen.

3. Unconsciousness:

  • If the person loses consciousness, place them in the recovery position to keep the airway clear and reduce the risk of choking.

4. Make an emergency call:

  • Call the emergency services immediately. State the presence of freon poisoning and all symptoms so that help can be organized quickly.

5. No mouth-to-mouth resuscitation:

  • Do not give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation unless you are sure that sufficient oxygen is available. Wait for professional help.

1. Evacuation:

  • Clear the affected area immediately to avoid any danger from the release of Freon gas.

2. Ventilation:

  • Ventilate the room well to dilute the gas and reduce the concentration.

3. stop leakage:

  • If safe to do so, seal the source of the release to prevent further spread.

4. wear protective clothing:

  • Use appropriate protective equipment such as respirators and gloves to protect yourself from exposure.

5. Make an emergency call:

  • In the event of major releases, contact the emergency services (112) immediately and inform them of the hazardous material.

6. consult experts:

  • Consult specialists for further handling and elimination of the leak to ensure complete and safe repair.
